Association for Constraint Programming (ACP)

ACP EC news: January 1st, 2006 to March 31, 2006

·        After a call for bids for the CP 2006 summer school, the EC received two bids. The accepted bid was from Kostas Stergiou and Toby Walsh, who will organize the 2006 CP summer school in Samos, Greece, on June 18-23, 2006. As decided by the EC after the 2005 school, general and advanced summer schools will alternate. This school will be an advanced school on global constraints. The school web site is at the URL http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/%7Etw/school.html

·        The travel grant scheme that was announced in Sitges is still on hold. In the meantime, the EC considered, and accepted, the following requests for sponsorship:

o       1000 euros to the International Workshop on Mathematics of Constraint Satisfaction: Algebra, Logic and Graph Theory, that has been held on March 20-24, at St Anne's College, University of Oxford. The workshop web site, containg all presentation slides, is at the URL http://www.cs.rhul.ac.uk/home/green/mathscsp/

o       1000 euros to the Annual ERCIM Workshop on Constraint Solving and Constraint Logic Programming (CSCLP 2006) to be held on June 26-28, 2006, at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Caparica, Portugal. Web site: http://centria.di.fct.unl.pt/conferences/csclp06

o       3000 euros to the 2006 CP summer school (see above for details about the school).

o       CP 2005 had a nice surplus. Many thanks to Pedro, Javier, and Peter for a wonderful organization and program! The EC hopes that this money will be useful to support many interesting CP activities in the future.

·        Frederic Benhamou, the program chair of CP 2006, wanted to know the ACP EC opinion about the possibility of eliminating doctoral program abstracts from the CP proceedings. The AC EC has discussed this issue, and it is in favour of the following:

o       removing the 1-page DP abstracts from the Springer proceedings

o       putting the DP abstracts and/or longer versions in the DP web site and in Corr

o       distributing the DP abstracts to the CP participants by printing a separare booklet, like a workshop proceedings

o       use Corr also for the workshop proceedings

However, full responsability for the program and the proceedings of the CP conference remains in the hands of the program chair and the program committee.

·        To encourage discussion on ACP-related matters, the ACP EC has started a Yahoo! discussion group on constraints, where anybody can join or leave at any time, by following the simple instructions at the URL http://groups.yahoo.com/group/constraints/ On March 23, 2006, this discussion group has 145 members.

·        To follow the discussion which took place at the ACP general assembly at CP 2005, the EC is creating a task force on CP applications, that will be led by Barry O'Sullivan. The role if this task force is to identify mechanisms to attract practitioners and industrial people to CP conferences, and in general to strenghten the link between academia and industry in the CP field. People interested in joining this task force should contact Barry.

·        After the 2005 ACP research award, given to Eugene Freuder at CP 2005, there has been an ongoing discussion about an annual versus a two-yearly ACP research award. We will hopefully finalize this discussion soon and post the result on the ACP web site and the CP newsletter. In any case, the receipient of the next award will be chosen by the EC among a set of candidates proposed by the CP community through an open call.

·        The ACP EC will be happy to receive proposals for initiating new activities, or for improving the current ones. Any member of the CP community who wants to make any of such proposals should send a detailed message describing his/her proposal to the address proposals@a4cp.org, with subject "ACP EC proposals: [a specific subject]".

The CP conference is the annual international conference on constraint programming and related areas. It is concerned with all aspects of computing with constraints, including: theory, algorithms, applications, environments, languages, models and systems. CP 2006 includes a technical programme, where presentations of theoretical and application papers, as well as invited talks, tutorials, posters and system demos aim at describing the best results and techniques in the state-of-the-art of constraint programming. Moreover, CP 2006 continues the tradition of the CP doctoral programme, in which PhD students can present their work, listen to tutorials on career and ethical issues, and discuss their work with senior researchers via a mentoring scheme. Finally, there will also be a number of workshops, where researchers will be able to meet in an informal setting and discuss their most recent ideas with their peers.

Papers are solicited from all disciplines concerned with constraints and any application domain using constraints. Example topics include problem modelling, problem solving, efficiency and usability. Papers which report on successful applications of constraint technology are also solicited.

Submitted papers must be original and must not be simultaneously submitted for publication in a journal or another conference. Authors are required to prepare their papers by following the Springer instructions found at: http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html.

After a successful series of five international workshops (Ferrara, Paderborn, Ashford, Le Croisic, and Montreal) and two international conferences (Nice, Prague), the third international conference devoted to integration of Constraint Programming, Artificial Intelligence, and Operations Research techniques will be held in Cork, Ireland, in 2006.

The aim of the conference is to bring together interested researchers  from AI and OR, and to give them the opportunity to show how the integration of techniques from AI and OR can lead to interesting results on large scale and complex problems. We explicitly welcome new ideas and methods for integrating OR and AI techniques that have arisen from real-world applications.

CP-AI-OR is intended primarily as a forum to focus on the integration and hybridization of the approaches of CP, AI, and OR technologies. A secondary aim is to provide an opportunity for researchers in one area to learn about techniques in others. 20 hiqh-quality papers have been accepted that either actively combine, integrate or contrast approaches from some of these areas, or focus on a single area of interest to all the communities involved. For details see:

http://tidel.mie.utoronto.ca/cpaior/index.php?n=Main.AcceptedPapers

As in previous years, CP-AI-OR'06 will be preceded by a Master Class where leading researchers give introductory and overview talks in a given area. This year, the topic of the Master Class will be "Modelling and Solving for Uncertainty and Change." The Master Class is intended for PhD students, researchers, and practitioners. For details see:

Yahoo! Discussion Group on Constraints

A Yahoo! Group dedicated to constraints has been established. The purpose of this group is to encourage discussion amongst the community, in particular in order to highlight issues that should be addressed by the ACP EC, as well as providing an online archive for general discussions.

To visit and join the group go to:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/constraints/

The advantage of a Yahoo! Group is that it is an easy way to manage discussions over a period of time. No email needs to come to your mailbox, but is instead archived so you can read it whenever you want. The access to the groups is limited to members of the group, but anyone can become a member by following a simple sign-up procedure.

There are many nice facilities available through the group.

For example, there is a feature for setting up online polls.

You can setup databases of various kinds and creating links to various web-sites that are of interest: I have already included links to CSPLib, CP-Online, the CP Conference Series, the Editor's page at the Constraint Journal, CORR and several other things. Please extend this as you wish.

We look forward to seeing this resource being used by the CP community.

PhD theses

Florian Letombe. De la validité des formules booléennes quantifiées : étude de complexité et exploitation de classes traitables au sein d'un prouveur QBF (in french). Université d'Artois (UFR Lens)

Supervisors : Pierre Marquis, Sylvie Coste-Marquis, Daniel Le Berre

Abstract :

This thesis is centered on QBF, the validity problem for quantified Boolean formulae.

Since QBF is computationally hard (PSPACE-complete), it is important to point out some specific cases for which the practical solving of QBF could be achieved. In this thesis, we have considered some restrictions of QBF based on the matrices of instances. Our main purpose was (1) to identify the complexity of QBF for some restrictions not considered so far and (2) to explore how to take advantage of polynomial classes for QBF within a general QBF solver in order to increase its efficiency."

Julien Bidot. A General Framework Integrating Techniques for Scheduling under Uncertainty. ILOG S.A. in collaboration with Laboratoire Génie de Production de l'Ecole Nationale d'Ingénieurs de Tarbes.

Supervisors: Bernard Grabot, Thierry Vidal, Philippe Laborie

Abstract:

For last years, a number of research investigations on task planning and scheduling under uncertainty have been conducted. This research domain comprises a large number of models, resolution techniques, and systems, and it is difficult to compare them since the existing terminologies are incomplete. However, we identified general families of approaches that can be used to structure the literature given three perpendicular axes. This new classification of the state of the art is based on the way decisions are taken.

In addition, we propose a generation and execution model for scheduling under uncertainty that combines these three families of approaches. This model is an automaton that develops when the current schedule is no longer executable or when some particular conditions are met.

The third part of this thesis concerns our experimental study. On top of ILOG Solver and Scheduler, we implemented a software prototype in C++ directly instantiated from our generation and execution model. We present new probabilistic scheduling problems and a constraint-based approach combined with simulation to solve some instances thereof.

·        FRODO: a FRamework for Open/Distributed Optimization

Dear all,

I would like to take this opportunity to announce the public release of our simulation platform for distributed constraint satisfaction/optimization problems.

It's name is FRODO: a FRamework for Open/Distributed Optimization. The framework is implemented in Java, and simulates a multiagent environment in a single Java virtual machine. Each agent in the environment is executed asynchronously in a separate execution thread, and communicates with its peers through message exchange. The framework is highly customizable, allowing the user to implement and experiment with any distributed optimization algorithm. Support for synchronous/asynchronous message passing, monitoring and statistics, as well as problem visualization tools are provided. A number of distributed algorithms are already implemented in this framework, like the Distributed Breakout Algorithm, and the DPOP Algorithm. A number of random evaluation problems are also provided, from two distinct domains: meeting scheduling and resource allocation in a sensor network.

This is the first release (obviously not perfect, nor commercial-grade ;-) ), so we would greatly benefit from your feedback, comments, ideas for improvement, etc.

If you have any questions, no not hesitate to ask me.

For more details, downloads, etc: http://liawww.epfl.ch/frodo/

Thank you for your time, and your valuable feedback!

Best regards,

Adrian Petcu.

·        Gecode 1.0.0

We would like to announce the release of Gecode 1.0.0

http://www.gecode.org/

Gecode is an open, free, portable, accessible, and efficient environment for developing constraint-based systems and applications:

open

Gecode is radically open for programming: it can be easily interfaced to other systems. It supports the programming of new propagators (as implementations of constraints), branching strategies, and search engines. New variable domains can be programmed with the same efficiency as the finite domain and integer set variables that come predefined with Gecode.

free

Gecode is distributed under a BSD-style license. All of its parts including documentation, implementations of global constraints, and examples are available as source code.

portable

Gecode is implemented in C++ that carefully follows the C++ standard. It can be compiled with modern C++ compilers and runs on a wide range of machines (including 64bit machines).

accessible

Gecode comes with extensive reference documentation that allows to focus on different programming tasks like modelling, implementing propagators, and implementing variable domains.

efficient

Gecode offers competitive performance with respect to both runtime and memory usage.

allows contributions

Gecode is designed to facilitate contributions on top of it.  CP(Graph) and CP(Map) providing graph and map variables for constraint programming is available as a first contribution built on top of Gecode.

Gecode and contributions built on top of it are available from http://www.gecode.org/

·        New opensource constraint solver

Here's a quick summary of features

  - Finite integer numeric variables

  - Floating point numeric variables

  - Integer set variables

  - Numeric, boolean, trigonometric, and set constraints, etc.

  - Generic constraints such as summations, indexed variables (similar to having subscripts on a variable), all-different, etc.

Lots of searching capabilities:

  - DFS, BFS

  - Different memory models for tracking the data during searches

  - Ability to define actions that will produce a search tree that are navigated by search techniques such as the order variables are selected for generation and how values are assigned

  - Local Neighborhood Search techniques

For more information please visit: http://jopt.sourceforge.net

·        New releases of the Parma Polyhedra Library

We are very happy to announce the availability of PPL 0.9, the latest release of the Parma Polyhedra Library, a modern library for the manipulation of convex polyhedra and other numerical abstractions especially targeted at static analysis and verification of complex software and hardware systems.

Besides improving upon almost all of the functionality available since the release of PPL 0.7 in December 2004, the two recent releases of PPL 0.8 and PPL 0.9 have expanded the usefulness of the library by providing new features that should be of great interest to people working in the research fields mentioned above.  In particular, the latest release includes support for:

The Domain of Relational Rational Grids

=======================================

The class Grid can represent and manipulate the set of solutions of a finite conjunction of congruence relations.  Elements of this domain can thus be used to encode information about the patterns of distribution of the values that program variables can take. Operations provided include everything that is needed in the field of static analysis and verification, including affine images, preimages and their generalizations, grid-difference and widening operators. This is the first time that one of the most precise variants of the domain initially proposed by P. Granger is made freely available to the community.  Moreover, as the PPL provides several polyhedral domains as well as full support for lifting any domain to the powerset of that domain, a user of the library can now experiment with the extra precision provided by abstract domain constructions and combinations including not only Z-polyhedra, but also grid-polyhedra, grid-bounded-differences and their powersets.

The Domain of Bounded Difference Shapes

=======================================

This is a subdomain of the domain of convex polyhedra providing coarse but efficient-to-compute approximations for large analysis problems. The domain can be instantiated to use a wide range of different data types, including exact arithmetic rationals or integers, bounded precision floating point data types with controlled rounding and bounded integer data types with systematic yet efficient overflow detection.  The full set of operations needed for static analysis and verification are supported, here included the semantic widening operator defined in our SAS 2005 paper.

A Linear Programming Solver Based on Exact Arithmetic

=====================================================

The class LP_Problem can be used to represent, check the satisfiability and optimize linear programming problems.  The solver is based on a primal simplex algorithm using exact arithmetic.

Other enhancements include a new configuration program and Autoconf function making library usage even easier; several new operations useful for static analyzers; new output methods for debugging;  improvements to the C and Prolog interfaces; several important portability improvements; and (only) a handful of bug fixes.

DOCTORAL AND POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITIONS

·        Post-Doc position WEIGHTED CONSTRAINT PROCESSING Applied mathematics and computer science department Toulouse INRA FRANCE

A 2 years postdoc position is available in our lab. in the Applied Mathematics and Computer sciences dept. at INRA in the frame of a ANR (french NSF) founded project. The project is aimed at the development, implementation and experimentation of algorithms for solving weighted constraint networks by mixing local consistency enforcing and dynamic programming like approaches. It involves three teams with a nice research record in graph decomposition, weighted constraint processing and the use of decomposition for solving weighted constraint networks and with active relations with other teams in France, Italy, Spain...

The project offers a nice spectrum of research from graph theory, development of new algorithms for weighted constraint processing, their implementation in a new platform and application to problems in biology (pedigree analysis, RNA gene finding...) using recent hardware with a large memory.

The ideal applicant will have a good knowledge of constraint processing and a taste for algorithmic development from theory to practice. Programming skills are essential. Additional knowledge in weighted constraint processing, graph decomposition and related methods is welcome. General knowledge of biology and genetics is welcome but not essential. French or english speaking is needed.

The contract should start around June 2006 (with some flexibility) and is renewable for a total duration of 2 years roughly.

Prospective applicants should contact Thomas Schiex

(http://www.inra.fr/mia/T/schiex) by phone or e-mail before March 26th,

2006. Use [ANR POSTDOC] for the e-mail subject.
